Brendan Cockerill

Overview

Brendan grew up on family farms near Clandulla and Ilford in NSW, and after spending almost 20 years in Cootamundra and Nubba, he has now settled in Canberra.     

Brendan began working with JMA Legal in 1998 and after 12 years away he rejoined the firm in 2025.  

He has a Bachelor of Laws with first class honours, a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics, a Graduate Certificate in Management and Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

Brendan has extensive experience in business law with an emphasis on establishing and restructuring business structures, business succession, transaction taxes, business entity taxes, wills and estate planning and superannuation. He has provided technical tax and superannuation advice to clients, accountants, and other lawyers. He has also advised on and prepared business structuring, succession planning and estate planning documents for a broad range of clients and businesses with complex business structures and family requirements.

He is experienced in preparing tailor made discretionary trusts, testamentary trusts and business control and management documents.

Brendan has presented at a number of conferences and seminars on business structures, tax, business succession planning and estate planning and has also provided in-house training for other lawyers, accountants, and financial planners.

Before starting his legal career, Brendan worked in rural lending for a major bank and as a Farm Business Consultant advising on business planning and management, budgeting, marketing and management accounting.

When not helping clients through their structuring, tax and succession planning maze, Brendan enjoys spending time on his farm, watching rugby, trying not to fall off motorbikes and camping with his family.
